Men's National Team

Match Report

“We experienced the heat tonight and with Guatemala you know it's going to be a dog fight," said John Herdman, Canada Soccer's Men's National Team Head Coach. "We've got to win our third match against Cuba and push the goal difference to take our country to the Quarterfinals."

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team drew with Guatemala 0:0 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2023. The draw builds on Canada’s undefeated streak in the competition.

Richie Laryea played an essential role for Canada, creating many chances in the attacking third and supplementing a clean sheet with shot-stopping tackles. For his offensive display and defensive tenacity, Laryea was awarded the Gatorade Man of the Match.

Canada Controlled the first opening minutes. It was a clear statement to attack from Herdman as Canada managed to break lines in the opening seconds, forcing Guatemala’s goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen into action.

As Canada continued to dominate possession, the absence of an opening goal gave confidence to Guatemala’s attacking hopes. But the Central American side, buzzing with adrenaline and confidence, was met with a sturdy and focused Canadian backline.

In the first 20 minutes, Milan Borjan contorted a diving safe to parry a bullet shot from within the 18-yard box. The second half saw Laryea produce a burst of speed to prevent a breakaway moment, catching a Guatemalan striker through on goal and forcing him into a benign area.

A trend started to develop.

As Canada pushed to score the go-ahead goal, pockets of opportunities arose for Guatemala. However, those opportunities were capitalized on by Canada’s backline to showcase their defence qualities.

Steven Vitória recovered a defence-splitting pass with a sliding tackle to prevent a close-ranged shot on target. In the game's dying moments, Zac McGraw, carrying a heavy burden in the form of a yellow card, made a clean tackle to prevent a breakaway chance and keep the game level. Aerial attacks and low-driven crosses were cleaned up by Canada’s back four, and when they weren’t, Borjan stood prepared to save the day.

The match was Canada’s for the taking.

Junior Hoilett had a great chance in the 29th minute. The ball was whipped into Guatemala’s 18-yard box where Liam Millar headed it back across the box to Lucas Cavallini. Cavallini rose above his opponent to knock down a bouncing ball for Hoilett. Hoilett attempted a flying volley that showed moments of promise but the ball just flew over the net.

The second half summoned an even better chance for Canada. A low-driven pass skipped across the six-yard box and fell to substitute Jacon Shaffleburg. With loads of space on the left side of the 18-yard box, Shaffleburg’s shot was met by Hagen’s big stature.

While Canada’s goalless draw leaves the team in third place in Group D, the team will look to build upon its defensive display and go top of the group when they take on Cuba Tuesday at 18:30 EST.
