Match Report

For the second time in as many games, Canada’s Men’s National Team had to rally from a goal down to seal a 1:1 draw as their Austrian camp came to an end.

Four days after coming back to tie Bulgaria, Canada conceded seven minutes in against Moldova before Tosaint Ricketts scored on the 10-minute mark with Canada dominating the game everywhere except on the scoreboard.

Eugeniu Sidorenco gave Moldova the lead after both sides traded a few half-decent chances. He was unmarked to head in a cross from the left side.

But three minutes later, Canada’s set pieces worked for the second straight game, as a goal was the result of tactics drawn up on the training ground. Pedro Pacheco once again delivered the corner that was headed back across goal.

Unlike against Bulgaria, where Ricketts won a Canadian penalty by taking a boot to the face, this time Ricketts was there to score it himself as the goal set Canada on their way.

Canada continued to press and enjoy long spells of possession but had a few shots miss the target until late in the first half when they were inches away from taking the lead. With five minutes remaining in the first half, Nik Ledgerwood launched in a perfect free kick that was met by Atiba Hutchinson at the back post.

Unfortunately for Canada, the ball rattled the frame of goal, striking the cross bar before going out. It was ruled that there was a deflection and Canada was given a corner kick that they were unable to convert.

The second half was about as one-sided you could get on the possession side of things as Moldova had to be satisfied with only a handful of half-chances on the counter-attack as Canada maintained possession well and pressed hard to force Moldova to turn the ball over.

The search was in vain, however, as Canada had to settle for another draw in a game that could easily have been a victory.
