Match Report

Canada heads home after its first came under Benito Floro without a win after giving up a 53rd minute goal to Adama Ba to lose 0:1 to Mauritania.

Canada held the lion’s share of the possession but couldn’t find a goal as they are still looking for their first win in 2013. Mauritania, meanwhile, never really troubled the Canadian defence until 20 year old Adama Bâ of French first division club SC Bastia was played in over the top before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

Borjan had come on at halftime in place of starter Kenny Stamatopoulos

At the time, Canada was playing with one player fewer as Marcel de Jong had been sent off late in the first half with two quick yellow cards.

Canada had a free kick in a good position 20 yards out from goal in the 34th minute but defender David Edgar’s low free kick was saved.

After going down a man, Canada continued to press. On one occasion, Issey Nakajima-Farran won some space outside the Mauritania penalty area before Oumar N’Diaye took him down. N’Diaye was already on a yellow card and as a result, the sides were leveled.

After the expulsion Canada spent most of the game deep in the Mauritanian end but couldn’t find that cutting pass that would have given them the equalizer.

In the 68th minute, second half substitute Samuel Piette let a low, hard shot go from just outside the 18-yard box. The shot troubled Mauritania goalkeeper Souleyman Diallo enough that he couldn’t hold onto the ball but unfortunately there were no Canadians there to cash in the rebound.

Pressing late, Canada again had a chance in the 86th minute when substitute Jérémy Gagnon-Laparé put in a high cross from the right hand side. It looked destined to land on Marcus Haber’s head but Diallo rushed out and, at full stretch, tipped the ball away.

The two teams played to a scoreless draw on Sunday with Canada fielding a very different lineup over the course of the two games.

Under head coach Benito Floro, Canada went with a lineup that had Kenny Stamatopoulos in goal with Marcel de Jong, Adam Straith, David Edgar, and Nik Ledgerwood in defence. Simeon Jackson, Pedro Pacheco, Julian de Guzman, Issey Nakajima-Farran, Tosaint Ricketts, and Marcus Haber made up the midfield and attack.

In the second half, Floro replaced Stamatopoulos with Milan Borjan (46’), Tosaint Ricketts with Jeremy Gagnon-Laparé (52’), Pacheco with Samuel Piette , Jackson with Daniel Haber (60’), de Guzman with Terry Dunfield (66’), and Nakajima-Farran with Keven Aleman (66’).

Mauritania’s starting XI featured Souleymane Diallo in goal, Demba Sow at right back, Oumar N’Diaye (captain, born 1985) and Abdoulaye Sanguaré at centre back, Abdoul Bâ at left back, Khassa Camara as a defensive midfielder, Oumar N’Diaye (born 1988) and Abdoulaye Silèye Gaye at the heart of the midfield, and Cheikh El Khalil Moulaye Ahmed, Adama Ba and Yacoub Deïna Bâ up front.

In the first half, coach Patrice Neveu replaced Abdoul Ba with Boubacar Coulibaly (35’) and in the second half, Bessam was replaced by Bilal Sidibé (66’), Deina with Samba Abdallahi (70’), N'Diaye with El Hacen Sidi (71’), and Adama Ba with Ismail Diakité (78’).
