Canada to face Switzerland on Wednesday

Canada will face Switzerland in a Women’s International Friendly match this Wednesday 18 May in Niederhasli, Switzerland. The two sides will meet for a second time in four days, following a 1:1 draw on Sunday 15 May in Roma, Italy.

Canada will face Switzerland in a Women’s International Friendly match this Wednesday 18 May in Niederhasli, Switzerland. The two sides will meet for a second time in four days, following a 1:1 draw on Sunday 15 May in Roma, Italy.



Canada is currently preparing for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Germany 2011. The team opened its final European camp in early May, with the intention to play several European opponents in the weeks leading up to the 26 June kick off against Germany. The 18 May match in Niederhasli will be open to the public.



Switzerland is preparing for the 2013 European Women’s Championship. Switzerland has participated in two FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cups (2006 and 2010), but has yet to qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Nine of its 16 players that faced Canada on 15 May have experience at one of those two FIFA U-20 World Cups.



Canada and Switzerland played to a 1:1 draw on Sunday 15 May. Swiss captain Caroline Abbé scored in the 38th minute, but then Kaylyn Kyle evened the score in the 66th minute. Canada also hit the crossbar in the 29th and 77th minutes (once by Sophie Schmidt and once by Desiree Scott).



Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners and presenting sponsor is Teck, will be participating in its fifth FIFA Women’s World Cup this 26 June to 17 July in Germany. Canada has also already qualified for a sixth FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the 2015 event scheduled to take place in Canada.
