Match Report

Canada opened their League A schedule with a record-setting 6:0 victory over Cuba at BMO Field on 7 September 2019, with goals scored by Junior Hoilett (three), Jonathan David, Jonathan Osorio, and Doneil Henry. Canada set Men’s National Team records for both the most goals scored (six) and biggest margin of victory (+6) for a home international match.

Teenager Jonathan David scored his record-setting eighth goal of the year, a new mark for the Men’s National Team. Along with teammates Lucas Cavallini (seven) and Junior Hoilett (six), this marks the first time that the Men’s National Team has featured three players with four-plus goals in a single season.  The record goal was the result of a magnificent team effort, starting with Mark-Anthony Kaye’s play in the back and completed with David’s terrific touch on the run and then his composure in front of goal.

Captain and Man of the Match Hoilett became just the second Canadian to score a hat trick in a Men’s National Team home match, following in the footsteps of Alex Bunbury who scored a hat trick in Toronto back in 1992. Hoilett’s first goal helped Canada tie a Men’s National Team record with 10 consecutive matches with at least one goal scored (achieved twice before); his third goal tied the record for Men’s National Team goals in a single season (24, set in 2011). Hoilett also became just the second Canadian in the last 20 years to record 10 career assists.

FIRST HALF:
Canada took the lead in the 13th minute after Hoilett intercepted an errant pass by a Cuban defender. The goal, a low, right-footed shot from outside the box, came less than 30 seconds after Hoilett had conceded possession on an attacking dribble.

In the 21st minute, Canada made it 2-0 on the wonderful goal by David. On the play, Doneil Henry first won a header off a Sandy Sánchez long kick. Kaye collected the ball, evaded his opponents, and played it back to Henry, who then moved the ball from Kamal Miller to Derek Cornelius and back to Kaye. The Canadian midfielder Kaye then played a long ball forward to David, who in stride tipped the ball forward off his chest, then beat defenders Yosel Piedra and Erick Rizo who were trying to keep pace, and then slid the ball through the legs of Sánchez for his record-setting goal.

That was all the goalscoring for Canada in the first half, although Davies had a point-blank shot pushed off the crossbar by Sánchez in the 25th minute after a lovely cross from Richie Laryea. In the 37th minute, David nearly made it 3-0 after he was clear inside the box, but his shot went over the crossbar. He was through again just a couple of minutes later on a pass from Hoilett, but his shot was stopped by Sánchez.

Cuba’s best chance, meanwhile, came in the 41st minute on a shot from Maykel Reyes, but Borjan was quick to make the save.

SECOND HALF:
In the second half, Hoilett made it 3-0 in the 50th minute on a pass from Jonathan Osorio. From a dropped ball restart, the play moved from Laryea to Doneil Henry to Cornelius to Osorio, who briefly lost possession when his pass bounced off a Cuban midfielder. Osorio regained possession and played a long cross forward for Hoilett who took his touch off his chest and fired his low shot from inside the box.

In the 52nd minute, Osorio made it 4-0 with a goal scored at the back post. On the play, Kaye won the ball on a tackle, played it forward to David who split a pair of defenders and incredibly hit the post on his shot. The rebound came to Hoilett who played a low cross to the back post for the charging Osorio.

In the 64th minute, Henry scored his first international goal from inside the box less than 45 seconds after an offensive sequence started with a Hoilett corner kick. With Canada on the attack, Osorio won a turnover, played it quickly to Cyle Larin who played it back to Osorio and then played it to Henry who directed it past the goalkeeper.

A few minutes later, Derek Cornelius thought he had a first of his own after Kaye headed the ball to him at the back post. Cornelius, however, was just offside.

In the 68th minute, Laryea had a chance after a combination between Osorio and Larin, but Laryea’s shot was just over the bar.

In the 81st minute, Davies won a penalty after he was taken down by fullback Alejandro Portal inside the box. On the play, the ball was turned over on a Steven Vitória tackle and then moved forward from Liam Millar to Kaye and then Davies. On the resulting penalty, it was captain Hoilett who completed his first career international hat trick.

BY THE NUMBERS:
Canada’s statistical leaders were Alphonso Davies and Jonathan David with four shots each, Samuel Piette with 73 passes completed, and both Davies and Doneil Henry with three steals each. Behind Piette, Alphonso Davies completed 67 passes while Jonathan Osorio completed 52 passes. Canada fired 18 shots (13 of which were on target), connected for 329 of 340 pass attempts (97%), won 11 steals, and held 66% possession over Cuba.
