Whitecaps Women Sign 14 Players

VANCOUVER, BC - Whitecaps FC Director of Soccer Operations Bob Lenarduzzi announced the return of the club's core group of Women's Team members, signing 14 players today. Forwards Diana Artuso, Ros Hicks and Phebe Trotman, midfielder/forward Kara Lang, midfielders Amy Apps, Sara Maglio, Carmelina Moscato and Andrea Neil, defenders Sasha Andrews, Liz Connor, Kelly Haxton, Randee Hermus and Sadie McLure and goalkeeper Erin McLeod have all signed with the club through the 2004 season.

Among the 14 players signed include three National Team standouts, current National Team members, the W-League's MVP for the 2003 season and the Whitecaps Women's all-time leading scorer. All players have re-signed from last season with the exception of Randee Hermus, who played the 2003 season in the Norwegian Premier League.

Six of the players signed today participated in the 2003 Women's World Cup last summer and currently play on the Canadian National Team. Randee Hermus, Kara Lang and Andrea Neil are prominent members of the National Team with extensive international experience.

Hermus, 24, rejoins the Whitecaps for her third season after playing in Norway last year for IF Floya. The Langley native has represented Canada 52 times in her career, most recently in a March 5th Olympic qualifying game versus Costa Rica.

Kara Lang played her first season as a Whitecap in 2003 and at 17-years-old has established herself as a National Team superstar. In her two years with the National Team, the Oakville, Ontario native has already played 41 games and scored 21 goals for Canada. As a member of the U-19 squad, Lang played 16 games, scored eight goals and was a member of the silver medal winning team at the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship. Last season Lang played five games with the Whitecaps, scoring two goals and one assist.

Andrea Neil, 33, is another veteran National Team member and is only the 2nd player to have reached the 100 game mark for Canada. The Vancouver native scored five goals and two assists through 10 games last year. Neil enters her 4th year with the club and is both team captain and assistant coach.

Sasha Andrews has made 21 appearances for Canada at the international level since 2002. The 22-year-old Edmonton native was also a member of the silver medal winning team at the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship. Andrews joined the Whitecaps in May of 2003 and scored two goals through nine games in her first season.

Midfielder Carmelina Moscato enters her second year with the Whitecaps. Since her World Cup debut in 2002, the 20-year-old Mississauga native has played 21 games for Canada. Moscato also played 20 games as a member of the U-19 Team. In five games with the Whitecaps last season, Moscato scored two goals and two assists.

Erin McLeod joined the Whitecaps in 2003 and recorded four shutouts through eight games in her first year with the team. The 22-year-old was a member of the 2003 Women's World Cup Team as a back-up keeper for Canada. McLeod, a Calgary native has played 14 games at the international level.

Forward Phebe Trotman enters her 3rd year with the Whitecaps, coming off of a career year in 2003 as the club's leading scorer and the W-League's Most Valuable Player. Trotman recorded 13 goals and 4 assists through 12 games last season. The 24-year-old is a native of New Westminster.

Diana Artuso joins the Whitecaps for her 4th year with the club as a forward. The 25-year-old Vancouver native is the Whitecaps all-time leading scorer. Last season Artuso finished 2nd in team scoring with eight goals and two assists through 13 games.

Defender Liz Connor enters her 4th year with the Whitecaps. Connor, 27, is the Whitecaps all-time leader in minutes played. The New Westminster native has played 41 career games and logged 3, 719 minutes.

Kelly Haxton will start her first full season as a Whitecap after being signed mid-way through the year in 2003. The midfielder was an impressive addition to the roster last season and with her speed and versatility, Haxton is able to play almost any position. The 21-year-old Calgary native notched five assists in nine games last year.

Forward Ros Hicks enters her 4th year with the Whitecaps. The 23-year-old native of North Vancouver played 13 games, scoring five goals and four assists last year.

Sara Maglio is a seasoned veteran and team-leader on the right wing. The 26-year-old midfielder enters her 4th year with the club. In 12 games last season the North Vancouver native scored two goals and four assists.

Amy Apps, 25, has played two years with the Whitecaps. Described as a hard-nosed player, the Unionville, Ontario native scored three goals and five assists in 13 games last season.

Defender Sadie McLure is a native of Maple Ridge. The 24-year-old played six games and logged 406 minutes last season.
