Whitecaps FC win group with perfect record in Scotiabank Champions League

Posted on 29 September 2016 in FIFA Club World Cup

Vancouver Whitecaps FC won their group with a perfect record of four-straight wins in 2016-17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League. The Canadian representatives completed their group phase schedule with a 4:1 win over visiting Central FC.

Cristian Techera (two), Blas Pérez, and Masado Kudo were the goalscorers in the Whitecaps  on 28 September victory.

Whitecaps FC had already won their group after three wins, but the fourth win was icing on the cake before their trip to the Quarter-finals in 2017 (date and opponent yet to be confirmed). The mid-week match was played in front of 14,237 fans at BC Place in Vancouver. Behind Whitecaps FC, either Sporting Kansas (one point, -4 goals difference) or Central FC (one point, -4 goals difference) will finish second in Group C after an upcoming 19 October finale in Kansas City.

Vancouver's Blas Pérez opened the scoring in the 11th minute from inside the six-yard box after a pass from Cristian Techera on the right. Techera then made it 2-0 in the 22nd minute on a penalty, with the kick awarded after an infraction on Pérez by the Central FC defence.

Whitecaps continued with their chances, but Central FC were the next to score on a free kick. Sean De Silva was perfect with his shot over the wall and beyond the reach of the Vancouver goalkeeper.

In the second half, Canadian Marcel de Jong was a key cog in two more Vancouver goals. On the third Whitecaps goal, a de Jong pass forward to Techera was then centered for Masado Kudo to finish. In the 70th minute, de Jong played give and go on the left before centering the ball for Techera to score his second of the match.

Whitecaps FC's starting XI featured Paolo Tornaghi in goal, Fraser Aird at right back, Kendall Watson and Tim Parker at centre back, Brett Levis at left back, and Cristian Techera, Andrew Jacobson, Marcel de Jong, Nicolás Mezquida, Blas Pérez, and Masato Kudo from the midfield up through to the attack.

In the second half, coach Carl Robinson replaced Mezquida with Marco Bustos (64'), Levis with Ben McKendry (64'), and Kudo with Kyle Greig (72').

Central FC's starting XI featured Jan-Michael Williams (goal), Kaydion Gabriel, Keston George, Kevon Villaroel, Keion Goodridge, Nathaniel Garcia, Leston Paul, Sean De Silva, Jason Marcano, Darren Mitchell, and Kenwyne Jones.

In the second half, coach Dale Saunders replaced Villaroel with Keron Cummings (52'), Garcia with Nicholas Dillon (69'), and Corbin with Kaydion Gabriel (84').
