Vancouver Whitecaps FC have collected three points in their away 2016-17 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League opener against Caribbean champions Central FC. The Canadian club won 1:0 in the 2 August match, with Cristian Techera the lone goalscorer at Ato Bolden Stadium in Couva, Trinidad and Tobago.
Techera scored the lone goal in the 34th minute after a centering pass from Erik Hurtado. Brett Levis had initiated a smart play down the left side to feed Hurtado on the run and into the box. Hurtado then played it from the left with Techera one-timing it from inside the six-yard box.
Whitecaps FC have a three-week break until their next match in the competition, a Week 3 encounter against Sporting Kansas City at BC Place in Vancouver, British Columbia on 23 August. Whitecaps FC will later face Sporting Kansas City away on 13 September and Central FC at home on 28 September. The group wraps up on 19 October, with only one club advancing to the competition's Quarterfinals in 2017.
Before Techera scored in the first half, Whitecaps FC midfielder Fraser Aird had a great chance from inside the box, but his shot was stopped by goalkeeper Javon Sample. At the other end, Spencer Richey made a few key saves in the first 45 minutes, including a great save on Leston Paul just before the half-time whistle.
In the second half, Nathaniel Garcia had a chance from outside the box in the 50th minute, but his shot sailed just over the bar. Late in the game, teenager Alphonso Davies had a shot saved at the other end by Sample.
Whitecaps FC's starting XI featured Spencer Richey in goal, Jordan Smith at right back, Pa-Modou Kah and David Edgar at centre back, Brett Levis at left back, and Ben McKendry, Russell Teibert, Fraser Aird, Cristian Techera, Nicolás Mezquida, and Erik Hurtado from the midfield up through to the attack.
In the second half, coach Carl Robinson replaced Techera for Alphonso Davies (66'), Hurtado for Kyle Greig (74'), and Mezquida for Kianz Froese (90').
Central FC's starting XI featured Javon Sample (goal), Kaydion Gabriel, Andre Ettienne, Kevon Villaroel, Keion Goodridge, Nathaniel Garcia, Leston Paul, Sean De Silva et Darren Mitchell, Nicholas Dillon, and Jason Marcano.
In the second half, coach Dale Saunders replaced Dillon with Keron Cummings (51'), Mitchell with Marcus Joseph (72'), and De Silva with Kadeem Corbin (87').
Referee Sherwin Moore cautioned four players in the match: Andre Ettienne and Keion Goodridge of Central FC as well as Erik Hurtado and Pa-Modou Kah of Whitecaps FC.
