Surrey United return to Jubilee final, Beauport close

Posted on 6 October 2012 in ↳ Jubilee Trophy

Reigning national champion Surrey United swept its group to officially book its ticket to the 2012 Jubilee Trophy championship final. Its opponent - be it Royal Sélect Beauport or North London Galaxy - will be determined on Sunday.

Surrey United won its fourth-consecutive group match on Saturday 6 October, a 4:0 win over group challenger Hollandia Impact. Katie Thorlakson and Faythe scored first-half goals before an Impact own goal and a second Faythe goal completed the scoring.

Surrey United will now have a day of rest before taking part in the Monday 8 October championship final. So too will Royal Sélect Beauport, who must hope Holy Cross draws or beats North London on the final day of the competition. Beauport is in first place with eight points and +8 goal difference after a 4:1 over Holy Cross on Saturday. North London Galaxy is in second place with seven points and +7 goal difference after a 6:0 win over Action FC.

North London Galaxy, however, has one game remain, the group finale against Holy Cross on Sunday.

In Group 1, either Hollandia Impact (six points, -1 goal difference), Edmonton Angels (three points, -2 goal difference) or Winnipeg WSA North Stars (three points, -4 goal difference) will finish second behind Surrey United. On Sunday, Hollandia Impact faces WSA North Stars while Edmonton faces Yellowknife FC.

From 3-7 October, all 10 teams in the 2012 Jubilee Trophy competition (split into two groups) play four matches over five days – one match against each group opponent. After the group phase, all 10 teams advance to the classification round on Monday 8 October, with the top teams from each group meeting in the Jubilee Trophy gold-medal final. The Jubilee Trophy championship match will be streamed live online via canadasoccer.com/nationals on Monday 8 October at 9.30 local / 10.30 ET / 7.30 PT.

Along with the Surrey United, Beauport and North London victories on Saturday, Winnipeg's WSA North Stars won 2:0 over Yellowknife FC. Saturday goal scorers were Kathy Gosselin (two), Léa Chastenay-Joseph and an own goal in favour of Beauport; Keri Zwikker (two), Tara Condos, Kate Bazos (two) and McKenzie Johnson for North London; and Desiree Scott and Michelle Kliment for Winnipeg.
