Sport Chek National Championships kicks off

Ontario and Alberta are leading the way after the first matchday at the Canada Soccer Sport Chek National Championships. Ontario teams have won all of their matches while Alberta has only a tie as a blemish on its record. Teams from across the country kicked off the five days of competition in Moncton, NB, Lethbridge, AB, Vaughan, ON, and St. John’s, NF competing at the U-14, U-16, U-18, and senior levels respectively in both male and female completions. Manitoba’s Bonivital soccer club leads the way with five teams represented, followed by Foothills club from Alberta in three competitions. Match broadcasts from each venue will be available throughout the tournament including all 10 final matches on TECK Finals Day at or via the Canada Soccer app available for iOS and Android devices.


Former national champions Ottawa Gloucester Celtic and Saskatoon HUSA Alumni were both winners on the opening day of the 2016 Sport Chek National Championships. So too were former runners up Edmonton Scottish while Group C sides Surrey Pegasus and Edmonton Green & Gold shared points in a scoreless draw.

The 12 men's side, split into four separate groups, will each play two games over the first three days of the competition. Ottawa Gloucester Celtic won 4:0 over FC Winnipeg Lions in Group A, Edmonton Scottish SC won 1:0 over Western Halifax FC in Group B, and Saskatoon HUSA Alumni won 1:0 over Mount Pearl FC in Group D.

Under sunny skies and gusty winds, eight of the ten women's teams got things underway in St. John’s, Newfoundland Labrador at the 2016 Sport Chek National Championships. There were no apparent upsets on opening day of the 2016 Jubilee Trophy. Richmond FC, Edmonton Northwest United, Scarborough GS United, and Royal-Sélect Beauport were all winners on the opening day.

The largest score line of the day was Beauport's 4:0 win over Winnipeg WSA North Stars. Scarborough GS United, meanwhile, had a more difficult time with home side Holy Cross, taking it by a slim 1:0 margin. Richmond FC's won 1:0 over Saskatoon SK Impact FC while Edmonton Northwest United won 2:0 over Halifax Dunbrack.

U-18 CUP - Vaughan, ON

The U-18 Boys Sport Chek National Championships got under way in style, as the marquee night game at the Ontario Soccer Centre drew in a large crowd to cap off an eventful first day. As the Woodbridge Strikers, the Ontario Boy’s representative, put on a show in front of their boisterous home crowd, it was the team from Quebec, who played earlier in the day, who were also making noise on the first day of competition. The first day of the U-18 Girls Sport Chek National Championship was played out under bright, sunny skies at the Vaughan Grove Sports Centre in Vaughan, Ontario. The opening three games all ended 1-0, with the fireworks saved for the last game of the day when a Samantha Hayes hat-trick powered Kitchener Spirit to a win over St. John's SC.

U-14 CUP - Moncton, NB

The Sport Chek Club National Championships U-14 Cup kicked off under sunny skies 5 October with eight matches across the boy’s and girl’s divisions. Alberta teams led the way with wins in both of their opening matches, including a 9-0 win from the Calgary Foothills girls. Ontario also won matches on both sides of the Cup competition.
