Bio

Fred Williams

Fred Williams... football family (brothers Harry and Walter)... he was 34 years old when he passed away from an infection on 1 September 1929 in Toronto (cavernous sinus thrombosis)... he was infected at work after asphalt splayed behind one ear (he worked on an asphalt truck)... one day after his death, a minute of silence was observed in his honour at the Hamilton Thistles v Fergus match in Hamilton... from the Dominion of Canada Football Association 1929 Annual Meeting just a few days after Williams’ death, “a letter of condolence (will) be sent to the widow of the family”... three weeks after his death, a memorial service was held at Ulster Stadium on 22 September 1929...

as noted in 1925 in the Winnipeg Tribune, “called the Tank for he goes in at everything and usually gets what he wants... he is a huge kicker and is apt sometimes to overreach his forwards... he can always be depended upon... he is a strong, robust defender”... as noted in April 1929 in the Toronto Telegram, he “is a powerful, aggressive tackler, and although his style is peculiar and robust, it is not n record that he has seriously damaged an opponent during the years he has been in the game”... as noted in 1929 in The Globe, he was “one of the finest and most gentlemanly players that ever kicked a ball in Canada”...
