Para Soccer announces roster for Intercontinental Cup in Spain

Posted on 23 July 2013 in Para Soccer

Canada’s Para Soccer Team has announced its 14-man roster for the 2013 CP-ISRA Intercontinental Cup set to take place in in Barcelona, Spain from 27 July to 10 August.

The Intercontinental Cup serves as one of two possible qualifying routes for the 2015 CP-ISRA World Championship for Canada; and if Drew Ferguson’s para side can lock-up a top-eight finish in Barcelona – they will qualify directly for the 2015 World Championship.

“Our main priority at this tournament is to finish in the top eight and qualify directly for the 2015 World Championship,” said Head Coach Drew Ferguson ahead of the team’s departure for Spain.

Canada’s road to the World Championship will not be easy as the team will have to navigate its way to a top-two finish in a group that features high-ranking opponents Netherlands, Scotland and hosts Spain.

Canada will kick-off the tournament with a marquee match-up against the host Spaniards following the opening ceremony.

“The Spain match is a crucial one for us, and with the opening ceremony just ahed of kick-off, we are expecting some strong home support for the Spanish team. It will be a great experience for us,” said Ferguson.

Canada’s squad for the tournament features a blend of youth and experience with many of the team’s veterans involved, but also three teenagers who will be making their first big splash in international action.

“We have assembled a strong squad,” said Ferguson.

“We have some real quality young players that are just lacking in international experience. This will be an important learning process for them.”

“On paper many people would say that we are likely the third best team in our group, but we know that we need a top-tow finish to qualify for the knock-out stages and for 2015 – so we’ll be ready to fight and hopefully surprise some people along the way.”

Canada open the tournament on 27 July against Spain; and will then take on Netherlands on 30 July and Scotand on 1 August.
