Sloly wins Brian Budd Award

In addition to the list of 2011 inductees, Toronto Police Deputy Chief Peter Sloly has been selected by The Soccer Hall of Fame & Museum Board of Governors as the second ever recipient of the Brian Budd Award.



Peter Sloly began playing youth soccer shortly after moving, at 10 years old, from Jamaica to Toronto. He excelled on the field while playing for St. Andrews Soccer Club, where he was coached by John Knox. Sloly played for Knox until he was 15, when his talents earned him a place on the Provincial team. He then went on to play 18 times for Canada’s U-20 team, including the 1985 FIFA U-20 World Cup in the old Soviet Union. He also made one appearance with Canada’s National Team in a match against Egypt.



Sloly played professional football for the Toronto Blizzard, alongside 2011 Soccer Hall of Fame Inductee, Lyndon Hooper. He also played for the North York Rockets in the Canadian Soccer League. At the open amateur level, he reached the Challenge Trophy final in 1994 as a member of Scarborough Azzuri.



Now in his 23^rd year with the Toronto Police Service, Peter Sloly is also a published author, professor and accomplished member of a number of law enforcement associations, nationally and internationally.



The Brian Budd Award, which will be presented for the second time only at this year’s induction banquet, recognizes those who have demonstrated dedication and leadership on and off the pitch, but would not otherwise qualify for The Soccer Hall of Fame honours. The award is named for the late Brian Budd, who embodies it through his accomplishments in the various Super Star Competitions between 1978 and 1980.
