October 2012: Canada moves up on world ranking

Canada gained ranking points for 1:0 win over Panama on 7 September 2012.

Canada has moved up 12 spots on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking published on 3 October 2012. On the heels of a 1:0 win over Panama on 7 September, Canada climbed back over 500 points and moved into 61st place on the overall ranking. Canada ranked sixth amongst CONCACAF nations in the monthly ranking published on FIFA.com.

The FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking looks at each country’s international results from the last four years. The ranking takes into account the result, the importance of the match, the strength of the opponent, the regional strength, the time period, and the number of matches per year. Matches played more than a year ago are valued 50% of matches played in the last year; matches played more than two years ago are valued at 30% while matches played more than three years ago are valued at 20%.

This marks the first time since May 2010 that Canada has more than 500 points on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking (Canada has 516 points, the same total it had from March to May 2010). The new ranking includes Canada’s two most recent FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, a 1:0 win over Panama on 7 September and an 0:2 loss to Panama on 11 September. Amongst the 12 teams in the CONCACAF 3rd Round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil Qualifiers, Canada made the biggest jump (62 points and 12 spots).

Mexico, USA, Panama and Jamaica remain the top-four ranked CONCACAF teams on the world ranking. Haiti, Canada, Honduras, Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago and El Salvador round out the rest of the CONCACAF top-10. The next CONCACAF matches in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers are played next Friday 12 October, with Canada to face Cuba at home in Toronto, ON. Also on the October 2012 ranking, Spain and Germany remain the top-two ranked nations while Portugal, Argentina and England round out the top-5. The next FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking will be published on 7 November 2012.
