Canadian Soccer Association welcomes Government of Canada’s additional funding for Canadian Olympians

Government of Canada to provide additional excellence funding for athletes preparing for the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games

The Canadian Soccer Association applauds the announcement made earlier today (13 March 2012) by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), and the decision by the Government of Canada to provide additional excellence funding for athletes preparing for the upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games.

“The Canadian Soccer Association is thankful for the continued support from the Government of Canada,” said Peter Montopoli, Canadian Soccer Association General Secretary. “We are confident that the Olympic Football Tournament will be an event the whole country can get excited about and where our Canadians will find success on the international stage.”

With Canada’s Women’s National Team already qualified for this summer’s Olympics after a second-place finish at the 2012 CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament played in Vancouver, BC this past January, and the Men’s U-23 (Olympic) Team entering its Olympic Qualifying tournament at the end of March, this additional support will allow our teams to focus on performance and build that momentum leading into the summer.
