Canada WNT ready for Korea Republic and the Edmonton cold

Canada’s Women’s National Team concluded on Tuesday it’s six-day camp culminating in the Women’s International Friendly against Korea Republic set for Wednesday 30 October (kickoff 19.00 local) at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton, AB.

This match against Korea Republic is the first time the team has been together since the conclusion of the inaugural NWSL season, and Head Coach John Herdman repeatedly noted its importance both on and off the pitch.

“We’re still bringing the team back after the NWSL and haven’t played as much as the Koreans in the last four five months together, so I think it is good opposition at this stage,” said Herdman. “I think the main thing is just getting us in to this stadium. The game is important but everything we do around the game is evenly important in getting the familiarity as we prepare for Canada 2015.”

The 18-player squad trained in various conditions throughout the week, all of which Herdman described as “mental resiliency training” for his players.

“We’re hoping all the Edmontonians come out and warm this stadium up on Wednesday night,” said Herdman. “This match is a great opportunity for the team to see what this city is about, and for the city and its soccer fans to show us what it will feel like when we fill Commonwealth Stadium for our opening match in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015.”

The match in Edmonton will be Canada’s first women’s fixture at Commonwealth Stadium since a 2005 friendly against Germany. The contest between Canada and Korea Republic will be a precursor to the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 as Canada will play the Opening Match in Edmonton.

Tickets for the match are still available, starting as low as $15 (plus applicable fees), with all ticket prices ranging between $15-$35 (plus applicable fees). Fans can purchase tickets online at ticketmaster.ca, by phone at 1-855-985-5000 or in person at all Ticketmaster outlets.

The Canada-Korea Republic match is on Wednesday 30 October and will be broadcast across Canada on Sportsnet One (21.00 ET / 19.00 MT / 18.00 PT).

Of note, the game field for the Canada-Korea Republic match will feature touches of pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Canada and Korea Republic will attack goals featuring pink nets and take corner kicks next to pink corner flags. In addition, Canada’s staff and bench players will proudly don official Breast Cancer Awareness pink scarves and tuques, graciously provided by Sport Chek.

The Canadian Soccer Association is proud to lend its support to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and its annual campaign to raise awareness for and to mobilize action on breast cancer.
