Canada WNT arrives homes to heroes’ welcome

Fans turn up at airports across the country to welcome home Bronze medalists.

Members of Canada’s Women’s Olympic bronze-medal team arrived home on Monday 13 August 2012 after more than six weeks on the road in Switzerland and England. The team won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, a first Olympic medal in the Association’s women’s program.

Supporters, fans and media gathered in large numbers to greet the team that captured the heart of a nation on a remarkable run to a third-place finish at the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament at London 2012. The Canadian players arrived home to airports in Vancouver, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montréal and Québec.

“This is incredible,” said captain Christine Sinclair upon arrival in Vancouver. “My teammates and I didn’t fully understand what was waiting for us here. This is so much bigger than any of us imagined.”

Veteran goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc described the homecoming as one of the highlights of her career.

“Of my 15 years on the national team – this has been one of my greatest moments,” said LeBlanc.
