Canada reaches all-time high on FIFA Women’s World Ranking

Canada’s women’s national team has moved up to ninth in the FIFA/Coca-Cola Women’s World Ranking for June 2007. It is the highest-ranking ever by the Canadian team, just three months after it had reached 10th in the March 2007 ranking.



The United States, who defeated a jet-lagged Canada 6:2 on 12 May in Frisco, TX, are still the number-one ranked women’s team in the world. Germany is still ranked second while Sweden has passed Norway for third place. Korea DPR, Denmark, France, Brazil fill out the fifth to eighth spots; Canada sits in ninth place and Japan sits in 10th place.



Canada’s current captain is Christine Sinclair, one of the best-known female athletes in Canada and one of the best female soccer players in the world. Sinclair has won back-to-back Canadian Player of the Year honours. In four international games this season, she already has five goals, giving her 73 in her career. She became the country’s all-time leading goal scorer on 3 June 2007.



The FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007 takes place 10-30 September. Canada is in Group C with Ghana (47th in the June ranking), Australia (15th) and Norway (4th). Canada played Norway on 12 September in Hangzhou, Ghana on 15 September in Hangzhou, and Australia on 19 September in Chengdu. The top two teams in the group advance to the second round.
