Toronto FC leads Vancouver Whitecaps FC 1-0
Canadian champions Vancouver Whitecaps FC host four-time champions Toronto FC in the second leg of the 2016 Amway Canadian Championship Final at BC Place Wednesday night. Toronto leads 1-0 on Sebastian Giovinco’s goal in the 43rd minute of the first leg 21 June at BMO Field.
The 29 June match will kick off at 19.00 local, with a live, coast-to-coast broadcast on TSN1, TSN3, TSN4, TSN5, and RDS2 (22.00 ET / 19.00 PT). The team with the most goals scored after two legs will win the series and lift the Voyageurs Cup, as well as qualify as Canada’s representative for the 2017-18 edition of CONCACAF Champions League.
With the 1-0 advantage, Toronto FC can win the series with a Wednesday win or any scoreline in a Wednesday draw. Vancouver Whitecaps FC, meanwhile, will need a victory by two or more goals, as a 1:0 Vancouver win would send the series tied into extra time (1-1) while any other one-goal margin would tip the series in Toronto’s favour (on account of away goals serving as the first tie breaker).
The 2016 Amway Canadian Championship is the most successful to date. Attendance figures for five semi-final and final matches thus far for 2016 is 88,038, up from a high of 87,525 in through all six games in 2014. Television viewership is also up in 2016, TSN’s first season as official broadcast partner. Total TV viewership for the 2016 Championship is 409,000.
The Amway Canadian Championship is Canada Soccer’s professional competition featuring clubs from Vancouver, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montréal. The national champion lifts the Voyageurs Cup and wins Canada’s lone spot in CONCACAF Champions League on the road to the FIFA Club World Cup. This year marks the ninth edition of the competition, with Toronto FC champions four times (2009-2012), Montréal Impact champions three times (2008, 2013, 2014), and Vancouver Whitecaps FC champions once (2015).
