Performance of the Match / Performance du match:
Jessie Fleming

As Canada’s only game of the international break, France was a tough opponent that reflects the quality of teams Canada will play in July. The two sides were evenly matched after the first 45 minutes, with the game deadlocked at nil-all.

France would open the scoring in the 51st minute with a goal from Grace Geyoro assisted by Delphine Cascarino. The French would add their second of the game when Léa Le Garrec scored in the 64th minute after a rare Kailen Sheridan error. Canada would grab one back in the 71st minute when French goalkeeper Constance Picaud committed an error for Jordyn Huitema to capitalize on and score from close range.

Canada defended in large numbers early on. The tactical decision enabled the team to prevent French counterattacks, but when the chance arose for France, the team countered without hesitation.

Jessie Fleming’s curling free-kick into the French penalty box was cleared away and France quickly rushed down the field. As Canada hustled back to stop the attack, the chance was quickly humbled when Sheridan caught a floated ball into the penalty box.

Fleming, who sprinted more than 60 yards to stop an attack, went down injured after the play but nothing came of the matter as the box-to-box midfielder carried on.

On the offensive end, Canada operated their attack with a possession-based style of play — looking to move the ball around in France’s end of the half.

As the midfield three — Sophie Schmidt, Jessie Fleming and Julia Grosso — aimed to thread passes through France’s defence, the home team’s high line made it difficult for Canada to move freely in the attacking third. But a chance fell for Huitema midway through the first half, however, her left-footed strike was parried by Picaud.

When France gained their two-goal lead, the Canadians refused to wave the white flag and fought their way back into the match. Canada increased their crosses into the box and garnered more possession in dangerous areas. That’s what led to Huitema’s goal when a Shot was spilled by Picaud and tapped into the net by Huitema in the 71st minute.
