Match Report

“We said today we had to climb, we had to keep moving forward and we did that,” said Bev Priestman, Canada Soccer’s Women’s National Team Head Coach. “To score two goals through set plays and keep a clean sheet against Brazil, overall I'm really pleased with the team’s committed mindset to get the win tonight and bounce back.”

Canada Soccer’s women’s national team defeated Brazil 2:0 on Sunday in their second match at the 2023 SheBelieves Cup.

Goals from Vanessa Gilles in the 32nd minute and Evelyne Viens in the 71st minute granted Canada’s first tournament win to put them second in the tournament standings.

Heading into the game, head coach Bev Priestman made several lineup and tactical changes, some of which saw NCAA player Simi Awujo start in the attacking midfield position. Janine Beckie and Ashley Lawrence played on the wings of the front line while Christine Sinclair came off the bench at halftime.

The tactical changes led to several goal-scoring chances for Canada in the first half. With midfielder Julia Grosso and Jessie Fleming playing in a double-pivot, the two took turns to receive the ball deep in their own half and spray passes to various dangerous areas in Brazil’s end of the pitch.

Adrianna Leon took advantage of Canada’s tactical change and Brazil’s high line. In the game’s early moments, Leon was in close range and fired a shot that tested Brazilian Goalkeeper Lorena's left hand.

Despite Canada’s offensive display in open play, their two goals came from set pieces. Fleming whipped in a right-sided outswinger that found the head of Gilles, who flew through the air to smash her header into Brazil’s goal.

Fleming curled an inswinging-freekick into Brazil’s box. Sinclair flicked the ball to the back-post, and it scrambled Brazil’s defence as the ball was cleared into the air. When the ball landed at Viens's foot, the striker unleashed a volley that pushed threw a wall of yellow shirts and into Brazil’s net.

Leading the match, Canada continued playing out from the back. It often led the Canadians to break out of their defensive third and unleash their pacey front line into Brazil’s half. When Brazil’s high press disrupted Canada’s buildup play, the Canadian backline collapsed on any dangerous goal threat to keep the Brazil strikers at bay.

But even then, Canada was protected by the safe hands of its guardian angel: Goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

Sheridan put on a show-stopping performance. When Kadeisha Buchanan hunted down a Brazilian forward through on goal, Sheridan stood her ground to come out on top of the one-on-one situation, allowing Buchanan to clear the ball.

Toward the end of the game, Brazil had a set piece that resulted in a downward-driven header, bound for the Canadian goal until Sheridan’s outstretched foot parried the ball off the goal line. Moments later, Sheridan made a sprawling save to tip another goalbound shot over the net.

Canada will play its third match of the SheBelieves Cup Wednesday against Japan at 15:00 local (16:00 ET / 13:00 PT).
