Women's U-20

Match Report

Canada were eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Costa Rica 2022 after a 3:1 loss to France on Sunday night. Canada fought hard against a highly-rated France team and conceded more goals as an unfortunate outcome of their push to get back into the game.

Canada moved the ball well early on and attacked with confidence. The opening 15-minutes saw Canada create two goal-scoring chances including a volley from Miya Grant-Clavijo that just sailed wide of the post.

France came close to opening the scoring in the 33rd minute but Canadian goalkeeper Anna Karpenko made one of her many saves of the night. Karpenko went on to save the reds again with a double save in the 45th minute.

France broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Magnaba Folquet’s header went off the crossbar and into the net. France doubled their lead in the 65th minute when Folquet took a shot that was deflected and sent the ball in the opposite direction of Karpenko.

Canada got one back in added time when Olivia Smith of North York, Ontario hit a beautiful low-driven volley within the 18-yard box that beat the French goalkeeper. It was Smith’s 12th international youth goal and Canada’s first at this year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.

Canada have received valuable experience as young developing Canadian players and will have one more opportunity to get international youth experience in the third group match against group leaders Nigeria.
