Match Report

Canada Soccer’s Men’s National Team ended the CONCACAF Final Round of FIFA World Cup Qualifying with a 1:0 loss to Panama in Panama City. Despite the loss, Canada remained at the top of the group after securing a spot in Qatar in its previous match.

In the 12’, Panama had a promising chance with a cross into the box, but the header went over the Canadian net.

In the 29’, Jonathan David ran onto a ball over the top but just wasn’t able to stay on his feet to get a shot on target.

Panama dominated possession throughout the first half, with most of Canada’s opportunities coming from set plays. In the 39’ Samuel Adekugbe took a free kick from just outside of the box, but the shot didn’t dip quickly enough to trouble the goalkeeper.

In the 41’, Eustaquio played a free kick into the middle of the penalty area where there were a number of Canadians nearby, but it was a Panamanian head that made contact first.

Just before halftime, Alistair Johnston made a perfectly-timed sliding tackle in his own box to deny Panama’s Alberto Quintero from getting a shot after he looked like he might be clear through on goal (44’).

Panama took a 1:0 lead early in the second half on a very quick counterattack with numbers. Cristian Martinez played an early cross into the box, finding the run of Gabriel Torres who volleyed it into the goal (49’).

Cecilio Waterman nearly doubled Panama’s lead as the home side committed players forward, but the shot went high and wide (55’).

In the 61’, Junior Hoilett played a ball through the defence to Cyle Larin, who then picked out David with an early square pass, but the Panamanian goalkeeper made a big save to deny the Canadian, and David was unable to direct the rebound on target.

Canadian keeper Maxime Crepeau was called into action in the 77’, making a great diving save on a free kick from just outside of the box to keep the deficit at just 1:0.

It looked like Canada had equalized in the 81’ after some excellent ball control and passing in the offensive end opened up some space for the Canadian attackers. A brilliant give-and-go play between Hoilett and Atiba Hutchinson, including a deft little back-heel pass by Hutchinson, created the room for Hoilett to pick out Larin in front of goal. Larin headed the cross into the net, but the play was ruled offside by the VAR.

In the 85’, Crepeau was just able to get his fingers on an in-swinging corner kick that looked like it might go directly in the net, and tipped it over his crossbar.

In the 89’, Jonathan Osorio found Richie Laryea wide on the right wing, and Laryea played in a low cross in behind the Panama back line but all three Canadian attackers couldn’t quite get a touch on it to direct it into the goal.

Canada had one final chance to equalize in the last minute of the match. A free kick from Hoilett was swung into the box, and Larin got his head to it but missed at the near post by inches (90+6’).

Maxime Crepeau got the start in goal for Canada. Alistair Johnston, Kamal Miller, and Atiba Hutchinson formed the defence, with Samuel Adekugbe and Tajon Buchanan acting as the wingbacks. Ismael Kone made his first start for Canada, along with Stephen Eustaquio, and Mark-Anthony Kaye in midfield. Lucas Cavallini and Jonathan David paired up as strikers.

John Herdman brought on Jonathan Osorio in place of Kone at halftime (46’). Cyle Larin and Junior Hoilett entered the match with 30 minutes remaining for Cavallini and Kaye (60’). Richie Laryea replaced Johnston (73’) and Ike Ugbo came on for Buchanan (87’).
