THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 17 December 1978
Canada wins a silver medal at the 1978 CONCACAF Youth Tournament, falling 0:1 after extra time to Mexico.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 19 December 2010
Canada draws 2:2 with Brazil and wins the II Torneio Internacional in São Paulo. Despite the draw in the championship final, Canada wins first place on goal differential from three earlier matches. Josée Bélanger opens the scoring before Marta reverses the lead with a pair of goals in the second half, the second of which comes on a penalty after Canada is diminished to 10 players. Canada comes back, however, with Christine Sinclair scoring the tournament-winning goal in the 83rd minute.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 20 December 1983
Canada wins 1:0 over Mexico in an Olympic Qualification playoff match in Fort Lauderdale, USA. It marks Canada’s second victory in three matches against Mexico in just over two months. Gerry Gray scores the lone goal of the match.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 22 December 1976
Canada wins a one-match playoff in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, a 3:0 victory over USA. Brian Budd scores the eventual winner before Bob Lenarduzzi and Bob Bolitho put the match out of reach with goals in the last 10 minutes. For Lenarduzzi, it is the first goal of international career. Goalkeeper Zeljko Bilecki - somewhat of a surprise starter in the eyes of the opponent - marks his international debut by posting the clean sheet.

Canada falls 1:3 to Honduras in an away Men’s International Friendly match. George Pakos scores the lone goal for Canada. Teenager Randy Samuel makes his debut for Canada.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 11 December 1987
Canada wins 2:0 over Hong Kong in the opening match of the Chinese Cup 1987, a World Invitational Women’s Tournament. Michele Houchen scores both goals in the win. Goalkeeper Carla Chin posts a clean sheet in her official debut at the international “A” level. Of note, the tournament opener comes just two weeks after teammate Gunn Baldursson dies.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 12 December 2003
Canada falls 1:2 a.e.t. to Spain in the quarter-final phase of the FIFA U-20 World Cup UAE 2003. Andrés Iniesta scores the opening goal in the 35th minute before Iain Hume equalizes in the 53rd minute. Down to 10 men, Spain scores the winning goal in extra time (Arizmendi 95’) and holds on for a 2:1 victory to knock off Canada.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 14 December 1978
Canada qualifies for the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time in Association history. Canada qualifies with a 4:0 victory over Costa Rica at the 1978 CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship. David McCaig, Ian Bridge, Lajos Nagy and Branko Segota score for Canada. It marks the first time Canada has qualified for a FIFA tournament.

Canada falls 0:1 to Honduras in an away Men’s International Friendly match in Tegucigalpa. Dave Norman makes his debut for Canada.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 15 December 1996
Canada wins 2:0 over El Salvador in an away FIFA World Cup Qualifiers match in San Salvador. Mark Watson and Alex Bunbury score goals in the second half while Craig Forrest posts a clean sheet.

Canada draws 0:0 with Brazil at the II Torneio Internacional in São Paulo, BRA. Goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé is excellent, posting a clean sheet in the draw.

Canada wins 1:0 over Czech Republic at the FIFA U-20 World Cup UAE 2003. Iain Hume scores the lone goal of the match.

Canada books its spot in the next round of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers with a 0:0 away draw against Bermuda. Canadian goalkeeper Paul Dolan posts a clean sheet.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 8 December 2003
Canada wins 1:0 over Burkina Faso in the FIFA U-20 World Cup Round of 16 to advance to the quarter-final phase. Canada wins back-to-back matches at a FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time. Four days after Iain Hume scores in a 1:0 victory over Czech Republic, Josh Simpson scores in a 1:0 victory over Burkina Faso.

THIS DAY IN FOOTBALL: 9 December 2010
Canada wins 5:0 over Netherlands at the 2011 Women’s Torneio Internacional in São Paulo, Brazil. Christine Sinclair (two), Diana Matheson (two) and Josée Bélanger score for Canada. Melissa Tancredi becomes the 20th player to make her 50th appearance for Canada.
