Hutchinson shines as PSV seal passage to Champions League

Posted on 14 May 2013 in Around the Soccer World

It is perhaps a testament to the lofty expectations of Atiba Hutchinson, and his club PSV Eindhoven, that the Canadian midfielder is left looking back on a remarkable 2012/2013 campaign in the Netherlands with a mild sense of regret.

Hutchinson turned in arguably one of the best club seasons ever recorded by a Canadian footballer as he logged more minutes than any other player on a PSV side littered with international talent.

With Hutchinson featuring in virtually every second of the action PSV held off a late charge from Feyenoord in the league to book a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers; while also making it all the way to the club’s second-straight KNVB Cup final.

But after having to watch rivals Ajax lift the Eredivisie trophy; and suffering a cup-final defeat to AZ Alkmaar – Hutchinson is struggling to be completely satisfied with his club season.

“At a club like PSV we are always pushing to win championships and trophies – so in that sense it could have been better for us,” Hutchinson told over the phone from Eindhoven.

“We have done well to get ourselves a place in the qualifiers for the UEFA Champions League, but we had a bit of a difficult spell in March and we didn’t have the finish we would have hoped for.”

If partially disappointed by a lack of silverware – Hutchinson should take solace from the indispensable role he played for the Dutch giants over the course of the season as he logged more minutes than any other PSV player (2941) in 44 domestic appearances.

“I played a lot of football, needless to say,” said Hutchinson.

“I’m happy about my personal performance. It was important for me to overcome my knee problems and enjoy a healthy and pain-free season.

“Not a lot of Canadians have had the chance to play in Dutch league – so I’m sure when I reflect on this season and my time at PSV it will be something that I am proud of.”

The Brampton native has finished the final season of his three-year contract in Eindhoven – but he is still keeping all options open for the future.

“I have really enjoyed my time at PSV and thankfully they are always open to having me stay here.

“I will have to consider my options and there really isn’t too much I can say about my future right now.”

  • Hutchinson is only the second-ever Canadian to make a first-team appearance for PSV Eindhoven. Former Canada defender Randy Samuel, like Hutchinson a Canadian international of Trinidadian descent, made five appearances for the Dutch club from 1985 to 1987.
  • Hutchinson has made 115 appearances for PSV across all competitions over the course of his three years with the club.
