Girls U18 Cup: The Panthers spoil Coastal FC’s home advantage

North Mississauga Panthers Kylee Bertrand 62’, Erica Burnet
Coastal FC Auneet Bhullar 30’, Jenaya Robertson
In the final game of the day, the North Mississauga Panthers of Ontario played the role of spoiler as they defeated the host team, Coastal FC, from British Columbia, 3:2, through an injury time goal off a free-kick from Erica Brunet.
Coming off the opening ceremonies of the tournament, Coastal FC was determined to impress the boisterous home-town crowd, at beautiful South Surrey Athletic Park, and get off to a good start. Thing were looking good, for the hosts, after Auneet Bhullar bundled in a goal from five yards out in the 30th minute, after the North Mississauga Panther’s keeper dropped the ball from a corner kick.
Bhullar’s goal would be the only tally in the first-half as neither side were able to generate much offence in a fiercely contest opening frame that was highlighted by some tough tackles in the middle of the park.
While the physicality continued during the second 40 minutes of play, the goals began to come as North Mississauga levelled the score, in the opening minutes of the second half, through a thunderous shot off the foot of Kylee Bertrand. Bertrand would then put her side up 2-1 in the 62nd minute after she volleyed a corner kick, which found the side-netting of the Coastal FC goal. Bertrand’s go-ahead goal was pure class and an early contender for goal of the tournament.
Backed by home support, Coastal FC would find an equalizing goal a minute before the end of regulation as Jenaya Robertson leaped above the North Mississauga Panther’s opposing defenders and connected on a powerful header. The equalizing goal, which resulted from a free-kick from the right side, sent the home crowd into rapture.
With the game looking like it would end in a draw, the visitors found the winning goal in added time as Erica Burnet hit a low free-kick from 25 yards out, which beat the Coastal FC keeper on the short side.
With the victory, North Mississauga Panthers move in to second place in Group A, behind Celtix du Haut-Richelieu from Quebec based on goal differential. The hosts, Coastal FC, will be looking to collect three points in their next match against the group leaders from Quebec.
