Girls U-16 Cup: Coastal FC going to the semis

Posted on 11 October 2015 in ↳ U-17 Cup

Coastal FC continued their winnings ways at the U16 cup as they dispatched St. John’s SC in the quarter- final round at the girls U16 Cup. Goals on either side of half-time from Vanita Bhullar and Kaelen Kanai were enough to advance the host club to the semi-final where they will play Lakeshore SC of Quebec.

The game kicked off under blustery conditions, which appeared to affect the play as much of the early exchanges took place in the middle of the park. With both team’s struggling to build any kind of sustained attack, the opening goal was fittingly scored off a corner kick.

After St. John’s Keeper misjudged the flight of the ball, Bhullar found herself in the right place at the right time as the ball dropped to her feet from 3-yards out. Bhullar would make no mistake from close range as she hit the ball first-time to the back of the net.

The play picked up considerably in the second half as both teams appeared to sense the urgency of the knock-out round. Buoyed by the home crowd, Coastal FC began to gain the territorial advantage as midfielder Harneet Dadrao tested St. John’s keeper with several quality long-range efforts.

Coastal FC’s second goal would once again come off a set-play as Kanai finished off a short corner kick play that was drawn-up straight from the training ground. After the ball was played short, drawing out multiple St. John SC defenders, it was eventually swung back into the box where Kanai hit a hard direct shot passed a helpless keeper.

Credit to St. John’s SC as they pushed to the very end however, Coastal FC’s imposing back-line who has yet to concede a goal all tournament long, limited any time or space that the opposing attacker had on the ball

With the victory Coastal FC plays tomorrow at 11:15am v Lakeshore SC of Quebec while Southwest United of Alberta plays Kitchener Spirit of Ontario in other semi-final tomorrow.
