Match Report

Cavalry FC came away with a 2:1 victory over provincial rivals FC Edmonton to advance to the Quarter-Final Round of the 2022 Canadian Championship.

It was the away side that had the first dangerous look at goal. A free kick from Tobias Warschewski took a dangerous bounce right in front of Cavalry keeper Marco Carducci, but stayed out and was cleared away in the 6’.

In the 16’ the FC Edmonton goalkeeper, Andreas Vaikla, somehow was able to come across the mouth of goal and stick his foot out to rob Jose Escalante of what looked like a sure goal.

Cavalry FC took the lead with a glancing header by Myer Bevan off a corner kick that was directed right into the far side of the goal (17’).

Just two minutes later, Bevan came close to doubling his goal tally and his team’s lead as he ran onto a through ball, but his shot was saved at the near post (19’).

In the 35’, Escalante was fouled at the edge of the penalty area by Saah Fayia and won the penalty. Bevan stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted, just sneaking his shot under the arm of the diving Vaikla (36’).

In the 54’, Bradley Vliet took down Fayia in the Cavalry box and FC Edmonton were awarded a penalty. Warschewski placed his shot into the opposite corner from the diving goalkeeper to get Edmonton on the scoreboard and make the score 2:1 (55’).

FC Edmonton continued to put pressure on the home side throughout the second half as they searched for an equalizer but were unable to beat Carducci to send the match to penalties.

Cavalry FC’s Starting XI featured seven Canadian players: Marco Carducci (GK), captain Mason Trafford, Ali Musse, Elliot Simmons, Victor Loturi, Benjamin Fisk, and Karifa Yao. Daan Klomp, Myer Bevan, Jose Escalanate, and Bradley Vliet rounded out the home side.

Head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. brought on Jean-Aniel Assi in place of Bradley Vliet (66’), Aribim Pepple for Myer Bevan (78’), and Charles Trafford in place of Ali Musse (84’).

FC Edmonton featured 10 Canadian players in the Starting XI: Andreas Vaikla (GK), Luke Singh, Mamadi Camara, Cale Loughrey, Kapri Marcus Simmons, captain Nyal Higgins, Saah T-Boy Fayia, Simon Triantafillou, Wesley Lanca-Timoteo, and Gabriel Bitar. Tobias Warschewski was the 11th man to start the match.

Head coach Alan Koch brought on Courtney Jr. Voshon Mitchell-Smith in place of Kapri Marcus Simmons (62’), Kairo Coore for Saah T-Boy Fayia (75’), and Julian Ulbricht in place of Cale Loughrey (85’).
