Dr. Bennett passes away

Dr. John Bennett, who served on the Canadian Soccer Association’s Sport Medicine Committee from 1990 to 1995, has passed away. He died peacefully on 18 February 2011.

Dr. Bennett served as Canada’s team doctor at the 1988 FIFA Women’s Invitational Tournament in China PR, the first women’s football tournament organized by FIFA. In 1995, he served as Canada’s doctor at the FIFA U-17 World Cup Ecuador 1995.

Dr. Bennett grew up in South Wales and joined the Royal Air Force in 1939. After the Second World War, he attended St. Mary’s Medical School in London and earned his degree in 1953. He then emigrated to Canada, first living in St. John’s, NL and then moving to Kelowna, BC and finally Ottawa, ON.

Dr. Bennett is survived by his wife Robina, his daughter Karen, son Mark and grandchildren Allison and Matthew.
