CSA Grassroots Program Scores Goals with Local Clubs

The 2004 season of the Canadian Soccer Association's Tide Mini Soccer Presented by CIBC is off to a tremendous start. This year over 250,000 players are expected to participate. Combined with their parents, relatives, coaches, referees, and volunteers, over 400,000 people will be at the festivals this summer.

There has been unprecedented interest from local soccer clubs across Canada for the program this spring. Currently, 209 festivals have been scheduled across 10 provinces, compared with 183 scheduled last year at this time. The festivals started at the end of February and will run through to the middle of October 2004. Mini Soccer is a youth development program targeted at children between the ages of 5 and 10. The program promotes basic soccer skills, fair play, and sportsmanship in a fun, family-oriented, festival-like atmosphere.

The CSA is proud to announce the return of Tide as the program's Title Sponsor and welcomes CIBC as the program's Presenting Sponsor. “We welcome CIBC as they join Tide, in sponsoring Canada's largest grassroots sports program,” says CSA President Andy Sharpe. In addition to Tide and CIBC, national sponsors of the program include adidas and Sunny Delight. Nutella is a recent addition to the sponsor list; they have just come on board as a regional sponsor for 2004.

"Tide cares about today's families. That's why we feel supporting the Canadian Soccer Association through the Mini Soccer Festival program is a great way to keep kids active and promote healthy development,” says Suzanne Geist, Tide Canada Business Manager.

“CIBC is delighted to partner with the Canadian Soccer Association and Tide on this innovative program benefiting so many young soccer players,” says Stephen Graham, CIBC's Executive Vice President, Personal and Small Business Banking and Chief Marketing Officer. “As the highest participatory sport in Canada, CIBC is proud to support a sport that is so widely embraced by Canadians and provides such positive influences for young people.”

Through this program, local clubs apply to hold festivals and receive a grant and sponsor benefits in return. Tide Mini Soccer Presented by CIBC is a fully sanctioned development program operated under the auspices of the Canadian Soccer Association, member provincial associations, regional, local and club members.
