CONCACAF completes draw for Futsal Championship

Posted on 16 March 2016 in Futsal Team

CONCACAF has completed the Official Draw for the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship, with 10 nations in attendance at the Hotel Barceló San José Palacio in San Jose, Costa Rica. Only eight nations will reach the finals, with Canada/USA and Honduras/Trinidad and Tobago still to meet in play-in series.

The CONCACAF Futsal Championship will be played at the BN Arena in San José from 8-14 May, with the top-four nations qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup Colombia 2016. Those four qualified nations will be known on 10 May when the group phase wraps up; the CONCACAF semi finals are 12 May followed by the match for third place and Grand Final on Sunday 14 May.

To reach the final eight nations at the 2016 CONCACAF Futsal Championship, Canada still has that one hurdle against opponent USA in a two-match play-in series. The two matches are scheduled for Wednesday 4 May (20.00 local / 22.00 ET / 19.00 PT) and Thursday 5 May (20.00 local / 22.00 ET / 19.00 PT).

"Until 6 May, our focus is the series against USA," said Kyt Selaidopoulos, Canada Soccer's National Futsal Coach. "We can't get ahead of ourselves until after we face USA in the two-match series. After that series, we can take it from there."

Should Canada advance, they will join Group B with Costa Rica, Curacao, and Cuba. The opposite Group A features Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and the winner of the Honduras/Trinidad and Tobago series.

In preparation for the upcoming competition, coach Selaidopoulos will hold a three-day evaluation camp in Vaughan, Ontario from 18-20 March with 29 Canadian players. For the series in Costa Rica, Selaidopoulos will need to reduce his squad to just 14 players.

Also upcoming on the Canadian calendar, Toronto United Futsal will face Sparte FC from 9-10 April in the 2016 Futsal Canadian Championship in Oshawa, Ontario.
