CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship postponed

Posted on 28 April 2009 in Beach Soccer Team

CONCACAF announced today that its 2009 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship has postponed until further notice. The championship had been scheduled for 29 April to 3 May in Puerta Vallerta, Mexico. The championship was postponed in consultation with FIFA and Beach Soccer Worldwide because of the growing concerns of swine flu in the country.

Canada is one of six teams scheduled to participate in the 2009 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship. Canada had been training briefly in San Diego, USA before touching down briefly in Puerta Vallerta, Mexico. The team has returned safely to Canada.

The beach soccer announcement comes on the heels of Monday's decision to cancel the CONCACAF Men's Under-17 Championship and postpone the final leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final. From the CONCACAF Men's Under-17 Championship, four teams had already qualified for the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009 (Costa Rica, Honduras, Mexico and USA). As for the CONCACAF Champions League final, Atlante won the opener 2:0 over Cruz Azul on 22 April. The return leg will be rescheduled for Estadio Andrés Quintana Roo.
