CIS announces men's soccer Universiade team

Posted on 3 June 2009 in Around the Soccer World

York University's Jamaal Smith and Francesco Bruno will represent Canadian Interuniversity Sport at this year's Summer Universiade. The two national champions are part of the 18-player roster that head coach Mike Mosher has announced for the 1-12 July event in Belgrade, Serbia.

Joining the 2008 champions are 2007 champions Graham Smith and Jason Gill from the University of British Columbia and 2006 champion John Konye from the University of Alberta.

Paul Seymour (University of Western Ontario) and Matt D'Angelo (Carleton University) are both returning members from the last Canadian team at the 2007 Universiade in Bangkok. Canada finished fourth at that event.

"We showed the last time around we can be competitive at that level," said coach Mosher, who served as an assistant coach in 2007. "We see the fourth-place finish from 2007 as a real positive, as motivation, not as extra pressure."

Several players on the Canadian team have come through the Canadian Soccer Association's National Training Centres. Alex Marrello (Buffalo) also represented Canada at the 2005 CONCACAF Under-17 Qualification Tournament while Bruno (York) represented Canada at both the 2001 CONCACAF Under-17 Qualification Tournament and FIFA U-20 World Cup UAE 2003.

Historically, the Canadian team has finished fourth in 2007 (Bangkok, Thailand), 15th in 2003 (Daegu, Korea Republic), 15th in 1995 (Fukuoaka, Japan), 16th in 1993 (Buffalo, USA), and 12th in 1979 (Ciudad de Mexico, Mexico).
