Posted on 11 August 2017 in Para Soccer

Canada Soccer have announced their 14-man Para Soccer squad for the 2017 IFCPF World Championships in Argentina from 4-24 September. The full squad will come together this week in Toronto for a five-day preparation camp before heading south next month for the 16-nation world event.

“We have an exciting final selection for the World Championships in Argentina,” said Drew Ferguson, Canada Soccer’s Para Soccer Head Coach. “We have quality teenagers as well players with quality experience, but also some new players who will make their debut at this level.”

Canada is in a group with Brazil, Republic of Ireland, and Spain for the upcoming IFCPF World Championships. In past editions of the IFCPF World Championships, Canada finished 10th in 2015, 12th in 2011, 9th in 2009, 12th in 2007, and 11th in 2005.

Teenagers Samuel Charron, Nicholas Heffernan, and Liam Stanley were all part of Canada’s squad at the 2015 IFCPF World Championships, as were veterans Jamie Ackinclose, Dustin Hodgson, and Damien Wojtiw.

The eight players making their IFCPF World Championships debut are Dan Benoit, Josh Da Silva, Cuauhtemoc Flores, Gaerrisen Freeland, Zachary Gingras, Raji Kamoun, Duncan McDonald, and Cameron O’Hanley. Da Silva, Freeman, and O’Hanley are all new to the Canada Soccer Program in 2017.

In Toronto, the Canadian Para Soccer team will train from 9-13 August. Ahead of this camp, coach Ferguson has featured 31 different players in eight camps, including evaluation, eastern, and western camps.

Canada's Para Soccer Team is made up of athletes who have cerebral palsy or have had a stroke or brain injury.
