Canada Soccer’s Toyota National Championships U-17 Cup kicks off in Fredericton

Canada Soccer's Toyota National Championships U-17 Cup opened to a beautiful day in Fredericton, New Brunswick's capital city. Fredericton Mayor Mike O'Brien opened the ceremonies before the Fredericton-Coquitlam match, with the British Columbia winners 2:0 victors over hosts Fredericton DSA.

Teams were eager to make a strong impression on the first day at the U-17 Cup. On the girls' side, CS Lakeshore did exactly that with a dominant 9:0 win in Group A action. On the boys' side, there were some evenly matched games with Calgary seeing some great scoring opportunities met with excellent goalkeeping from Halifax City in a 2:2 draw.


Group A - CS Mistral Sherbrooke (QC) 2:0 (ON) North Mississauga SC

An exciting match with Sherbrooke capitalizing on some good chances. Silva Debaba-Katimba opened the scoring late in the first half and Alexandre CÔTÉ added another just as the second half got underway to secure three points for the Quebec side.

Group A - Calgary Northside Hurricanes (AB) 2:2 (NS) Halifax City SC

It was a tight match between Calgary and Halifax. Derek Brust’s early goal was answered by two in a row from Halifax City’s Carson Ripoll, but Calgary managed to tie it up in the 80th minute as Brust scored his second to earn Calgary a point.

Group B - Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC (BC) 2:0 (NL) Feildians AA St. John's

Coquitlam controlled the tempo of the game, but strong goaltending from Feildians’ Jacob Dyer kept the game tight. Coquitlam goals were scored by Ethan Silver and Tali Romero.

Group B - Winnipeg Bonivital SC (MB) 6:1 (PE) Winsole Charlottetown Royals FC

Winnipeg were strong in their first appearance of the U-17 Cup. They won 6:1 over Winsloe-Charlottetown, showing a good ability to move the ball and deliver on opportunities. Rinor Hoxha (3), Eric Chaput (2), and Joseph Owitkoti scored for Bonivital.


Group A - CS Lakeshore (QC) 9:0 (SK) Saskatoon Sask Selects

The team from CS Lakeshore dominated from the opening whistle with a 9:0 win over Saskatoon. Lakeshore scored quickly and jumped out to a 6:0 lead by the half and added three more in the second half. Shyanne Wylie Gordon (3), Magalie Depot (2), Stefanie Kouzas, Caroline Gubernat, Olivia Mazzarello, and Florence Laroche scored for Lakeshore.

Group A - Sherwood Park Phoenix (AB) 0:1 (MB) Winnipeg Bonivital SC

Winnipeg edged Sherwood Park with the single goal scored late in the first half. Jojo Ngongo scored for Winnipeg Bonivital at the 38th minute.

Group B - Coquitlam Metro-Ford SC (BC) 2:0 (NB) Fredericton DSA

Coquitlam topped Fredericton 2:0 in the opening match of the U-17 Cup. Goals were scored by Madeline Low and Jayden Nielsen.

Group B - Burlington YSC (ON) 4:0 (NS) Suburban FC

Burlington came on strong to win 4:0 over Halifax’s Suburban FC. Goals were scored by Jenna Leslie, Mairin Boyle, Jaia Riggin and Abbigayle Morrell.

Canada Soccer's Toyota National Championships run 4-9 October 2017 in Surrey, British Columbia, Fredericton, New Brunswick, and Calgary, Alberta. At all age levels, the National Championships provide a meaningful soccer experience for host cities and participating teams, as well as the player, coaches, support staff, officials, and volunteers.
