Canada returns from Beach Soccer tournament

Posted on 22 June 2009 in Beach Soccer Team

Canada's beach soccer team has returned home from the 2009 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico. Canada finished fifth after a 4:3 win over Bahamas in the placement match on 20 June.

"After being defeated by the home team Mexico 10:0, Canada found a way to regroup and push the CONCACAF Champions
El Salvador to the limit and a close 6:8 loss," said coach Ross Ongaro. "We then defeated Bahamas 4:3 on a penalty late in the game."

After the opening-match shutout, Canada pushed El Salvador in the second group match. Canada was down 0-4 before fighting back to within a goal. El Salvador countered and stayed ahead 6-5 and 7-6 before pulling away for good in the 8:6 victory. Kyle Yamada scored four of Canada's six goals.

In the final game, Yamada scored three more goals in the 4:3 victory over Bahamas. After Bahamas tied the match 3-3 late in the second period, Canada's Jason Miniaci scored the winner late in the third period.

While Canada finished fifth ahead of Bahamas, Mexico finished third after a 5:4 win over USA in the third-place match. El Salvador, meanwhile, won the championship with a 6:3 victory over Costa Rica.
