Canada prepares for El Salvador

Posted on 16 June 2009 in Beach Soccer Team

Canada’s beach soccer team needs to rebound with a victory today at the 2009 CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship. A victory will go a long way in Canada’s effort to advance to the semi-final stage and a chance at qualifying for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Dubai 2009.

"With a win against El Salvador, we are back in the playoff picture," says coach Ross Ongaro.

Canada lost its opening group match 0:10 to host Mexico on Wednesday. Canada faces El Salvador on Thursday and Mexico faces El Salvador on Friday. The top-two teams in the three-team group advance to the semi-final stage.

"Mexico today showed that Beach Soccer is a game of preparation and skill," said coach Ongaro. "Firing on all cylinders and playing at home, Mexico proved to be too strong for Canada."

The good news for Canada is the potential clean slate it will get on Thursday. If Mexico is expected to run the table, then a win against El Salvador could keep Canada in second place in the group stage. Canada would then advance to the semi-final stage to face the top team from the opposite group (Bahamas, Costa Rica or USA).

The CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship runs 17-21 June in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico. The top-two teams in the six-team tournament qualify for the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Dubai 2009. The 16-team world competition runs 16-22 November.
