Canada M17 battles to draw in Costa Rica

After four days of preparation in Florida, Canada’s Men’s U-17 Team battled Costa Rica to a 1:1 draw on Tuesday 12 February in the team’s first international match of the February 2013 camp.

Striker Andrew Gordon scored Canada’s lone goal of the match at the National Training Center in San Jose, Costa Rice. Gordon stole in behind the Costa Rican back-line and found the net with a header on a free kick played in by midfielder Mikaël Cantave.

“Overall it was a positive performance in hot, difficult conditions against a strong Costa Rican team,” said Head Coach Sean Fleming after the match.

“We played well at times – but went through spells where we gave the ball away too easily. We need to continue to learn how to read and manage situations better. This match will serve as an excellent stepping stone for our continued growth.”

Canada M17 has another friendly against Costa Rica scheduled for Thursday 14 February back at the National Training Center (15.00 local).

Fleming’s team is continuing its preparations for the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship set to take place in Panama in April.
