Canada Edges Japan 2-1

Ottawa, Ontario – Canada's Women's Under-19 Team edged Japan 2-1 in Houston, Texas during the adidas Cup on May 31. This marks Canada's first international win.

Shinobu Oho of Japan netted the first goal of the match in the 10th minute putting Japan up by one but Lise Backman of Canada responded with the equalizer in the 29th minute. Amy Vermuelen scored the game-winning goal late in the second half (89th minute) to secure the win for Canada.

“It was a tremendous effort by our team,” said head coach Ian Bridge. “Hard work and perseverance by all players paid off with winning goal in the 89th minute. A great first victory for the Under-19 Women's program.”

Canada will compete against Finland on June 2 at 4:00 p.m. (local time) to finish the tournament.
