Canada draws hosts Trinidad & Tobago for the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship

Canada Soccer’s Women’s U-20 Team has been drawn into Group A against hosts Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica and a Caribbean nation yet to be determined the 2018 CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship coming up in January 2018. Group B will see the United States joined by Nicaragua, Mexico and an additional Caribbean nation to yet to be determined.
“We are pleased with the draw on a few different levels, one being that we will experience two different styles of play between a Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago in our group, something that these players will continually face within the program as they progress towards the Women’s National Team,” said Bev Priestman, Canada Soccer National EXCEL Director and Women’s U-20 team coach. “But also we’ll get the opportunity to grow through our three group matches, build chemistry and build some momentum, before we meet up with CONCACAF’s historically dominant teams should we make it to the knock out stages of the tournament. We will certainly be looking to return to the final, but our ultimate goal will to qualify for the FIFA tournament and a tournament with pressure will help us grow and be as competitive as possible come August.”
The Ato Boldon Stadium, in Couva, Trinidad, will host all sixteen matches, to be played across eight match days in January. Canada will play Costa Rica on the opening day, 18 January, followed by the hosts Trinidad and Tobago on 20 January, and the last group stage match against a yet to be determined Caribbean nation on 22 January. The full tournament schedule can be found below.
Competing in international youth tournaments is a critical component of Canada Soccer's EXCEL program for the development of future Women’s National Team players.
Canada are four-time CONCACAF women's youth champions, twice at the U-20 level and once each at the U-17 and U-15 levels. Canada have participated in seven of eight FIFA U-20 Women's World Cups since the biennial tournament was initiated in 2002, including a silver medal at the inaugural edition at home.
Canada Soccer Women’s National EXCEL Program brings together the best with the best at the national youth level. Operating across the U-14 to U-20 age groups, the program is designed to deliver an aligned talent structure and system that progresses more top players to Canada’s Women’s National Team.
The top three teams from the CONCACAF championship will qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France taking place in August 2018. The draw to determine the competition format for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 will take place on International Women’s Day, 8 March 2018, in France.
