Posted on 8 October 2015 in ↳ U-15 Cup

On opening day of the 2015 Sport Chek National Club Championships U-14 Cup, Surrey United SC of British Colombia ended their first game of the tournament with a victory against Fundy United of New Brunswick by a score of 3:1.

Kick-off was at 4 pm NLT, where athletes and spectators alike braved the bitter October weather at Mt. Pearl’s Ed Moist Field.

The game got off to a rocky start for Surrey United SC, when an early goal from No. 19, team captain Navraj Purewal, was called back due to an offside call.

Soon after the call, Surrey United SC’s No. 13, Gaven Samra, scored the team’s first countable goal, with an assist inside the 18 yard box from No. 10, fellow striker Simon Colyn.

Surrey United SC controlled most of the first half, having many chances on the net. Despite their starting goalie, Josh DeJong, being injured with a broken leg, Fundy United’s defenders and second goalie, Mitchell Gallant, stepped up and met Surrey United SC strikers head on.

Gallant gave his all in Wednesday’s game, stopping many attacks from Surrey United SC and saving all but a few direct shots on net.

Midway through the first half of the game, No. 9 of Surrey United, Arjun Mann, scored the team’s second goal, picking out the upper right corner of the net from the top of the box.

At the end of the first half, Fundy United was awarded a free kick at the top left side of the box because of a slide tackle gone awry. No. 9, Daniel Muse Dejene, made the most of this chance, ending the first half of the game with Fundy United trailing Surrey United SC 2:1.

Midway through the second half, Surrey United SC was awarded a penalty shot after a handball was called inside the box. Arjun Mann took the kick, scoring his second and the team’s third goal of the game.

For the remainder of the half, possession of the play bounced back between the two teams, both fighting just as hard to regain control of the play.

With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Fundy United’s No. 19, Jason Cho, received a yellow card following several warnings throughout the half.

Fundy United need a victory against Bontival SC of Manitoba Thursday at 3pm NLT for a chance to play the first ranked team in Group C.

Surrey United will also play Bontival SC Friday Oct 9 at 3pm NLT to determine their standing in Group B.
