In Canada’s first match of the CONCACAF Final Round of 1994 FIFA World Cup USA Qualifiers, Canada has a victory “taken away” after Honduras scores a late penalty in a 2:2 draw at Estadio Tiburcio Carías Andino in Tegucigalpa. Cesar Villeda scores the equalizer in the 89th minute - the third penalty goal of the match - to the delight of 30,000 Honduran fans. John Catliff and Richardson Smith had traded penalty goals in the first half. After Catliff’s goal gave Canada a 1-0 lead, a five-minute stoppage was required until fans stopped throwing “missiles” and bottles in the direction of the match officials and Canadian players. Alex Bunbury then gave Canada a 2-1 lead midway through the second half (which prompted fans to again throw projectiles) before Villeda scored the late equaliser.
