U-18 Girls: Final day of group stage necessary to determine finalists

Day four of the U-18 Cup competition at the National Club Championships saw another series of closely decided matches, which leaves the standing fairly open leading into the final day of group stage matches.

In group A, Quebec’s Lanaudière-Centre has tied Saskatchewan Eastside Vortex on top of the standings with Saturday’s 1:1 draw with BC’s Fusion FC. Kassandra Ouellet (QC) and Kate Rizzardo (BC) created the deadlock. Lanaudière-Centre will now have to wait and see what Eastside Vortex manages to play for on Sunday as the Quebec club will enjoy a rest day. The Vortex was inactive on Saturday.

Richmond Hill Raiders are sitting comfortably on top of group B with a 3-1-0 record and total of 10 points. They captured their third win of the tournament on Saturday by defeating Valley United (NS) 1:0 thanks to a Diarra Simmons’ goal.

The only opponent that could threaten Ontario’s place in the final (Richmond Hill is not playing on Sunday) is Alberta’s Victoria. Victoria had a rest day on Saturday and will look to capture a decisive win over Newfoundland on Sunday to squeeze into the final. Alberta would need to win by at least four goals in order to grab group B’s spot in the final from Ontario’s Richmond Hill Raiders.

In other Saturday matches, Manitoba’s FC Northwest Nitro Starz’s Ashley Adams scored twice to give her club a 2:0 win over Sherwook Parkdale Rangers (PE). Newfoundland and Labrador defeated New Brunswick 2:0 in the final match of the day in Sydney, NS.
