Canada returns home from Under-20 championship
Canada has returned home from the 2010 CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in Ciudad Guatemala. The young Canucks finished fourth in the eight-team tournament which ran 20-30 January.

Before returning home, the team enjoyed an evening as guests to Her Excellency Leeann McKechnie, Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Guatemala. The full Canadian team, including families who made the trip to Guatemala, was hosted by Ambassador McKechnie at her official home.

At the reception, Ambassador McKechnie welcomed the players and thanked them for representing Canada at the international level. Canadian captain Chelsea Stewart then presented the Ambassador with a signed team jersey that the Ambassador promised to wear at future Canadian events.

Canada's 23 players have all returned to their homes, clubs and schools in Canada and USA.

Canada, whose title sponsor is Winners, posted three wins and two losses at the CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship. It did not qualify for the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup. In five games, it scored six goals and allowed three goals against. The team's biggest weakness was scoring, as it played without former Canadian U-20 Player of the Year Jonelle Filigno who was unavailable because of a knee injury. Two years ago, Filigno scored four goals when Canada won its second CONCACAF championship.

Many players were also sick throughout the tournament, with players missing from every match.

Ten of Canada's 23 players in Guatemala are eligible for the next CONCACAF Women's Under-20 Championship in 2012. Coach Carolina Morace said she planned to work with the National Training Centres to help improve these players before the next championship in two years. She also expects to see some of the graduating players make their way into the senior pool as the players implement what they've learned into their daily routines with their respective clubs.
