Draw results announced for CONCACAF Champions League
Mexico's Deportivo Cruz Azul will face Panama's Deportivo Arabe Unido in the quarter-final stage of the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League next March. Cruz Azul, a finalist in last year's inaugural competition, will need to defeat Deportivo Arabe Unido and then the winner of the Marathon-Pumas series to advance to the 2010 confederation final.
Last year's champion Atlante FC, who will represent CONCACAF next month in the FIFA Club World Cup UAE 2009, did not qualify for this year's confederation championship. Instead, the four Mexican representatives were Cruz Azul, Pumas, Pachuca and Toluca. All four Mexican clubs are still alive in 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League competition. The results of the Championship Round Draw were released on 17 November. On one side, Cruz Azul faces Deportivo Arabe Unido and Mexico's Pumas de la UNAM faces Honduras' Marathon. On the other side of the final eight, Mexico's Toluca faces USA's Columbus Crew while Mexico's Pachuca faces Guatemala's Comunicaciones. The quarter-final home-and-away phase runs 9-18 March; the semi-final home-and-away phase runs 30 March to 8 April; and the final home-and-away phase runs 20-29 April. The champion qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup 2010. Canada's lone representative in the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League was Toronto FC, winner of the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship. Toronto FC was eliminated in the preliminary phase by Puerto Rico's Puerto Rico Islanders. Last season, Canada's Impact de Montréal reached the quarter-final stage of the 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League. |
