Canada’s men’s U-20 team won some ground in the standings today at the 2009 CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship. The young Canucks won 2:0 over Mexico, giving Canada its first three points in the competition. Canada now sits one point back of group leaders Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago.
While Canada won its match 2:0 over Mexico, Costa Rica and host Trinidad & Tobago played to a 0:0 draw in the second game at Marvin Lee Stadium on Monday night. Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago have four points each (+1 goal differential) while Canada has three points (+1) and Mexico has no points (-3).
Despite going down to 10 men, Canada pulled off an impressive 2:0 victory over Mexico, all but sealing Mexico’s fate in the group (Mexico was officially eliminated later that night). Randy Edwini-Bonsu scored both of Canada’s goals in the second half.
Canada can clinch a berth to the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 with a win over Costa Rica on Wednesday. The Canada-Costa Rica match kicks off at 17.00 on 11 March while the Mexico-Trinidad & Tobago match kicks off at 19.00.
