The Canadian Soccer Association just wrapped up the Women in Coaching Initiative, a demanding eight-day course featuring 14 female coaches. The course, which ran 7-15 August, provided certification at the B License Provincial and B License National level. More

Hart, Fonseca part of National Capital Coaching Weekend

Canadian national coaches Stephen Hart and Tony Fonseca will take part in the 4th Annual National Capital Coaching Weekend and Conference in Nepean, ON. The weekend runs 5-7 March and features four Canadian Soccer Association staff members: Hart, Fonseca, Ray Clark and David Benning. The weekend is organized by the Nepean Hotspurs Soccer Club.
The Nepean Hotspurs have designed the weekend to provide the region "with demonstrations of the principles of coaching that should be used by our so-called competitive teams competing at the provincial and regional levels." More
FIFA Futuro III Coaching the Coaches held in Laval

The FIFA Futuro III Coaching the Coaches course has concluded in Laval, QC this week. The 11-day course was hosted by the Canadian Soccer Association in conjunction with the Fédération de Soccer du Québec. In attendance were 30 Canadian conductors; the course was led by FIFA instructors Michel Richard of Switzerland and Philippe Redon from France.
The FIFA Futuro III Course provides coaching education for Canadian coaching instructors. The Canadian instructors are responsible for training future coaches in Canada. More
New Advanced Coaching Course Set For July

This new course is aimed at coaches of elite players with a desire to learn more about the tactics and strategies of the modern game of soccer. Participants will study the technical, tactical, physiological and psychological aspects of soccer as played at the highest level and examine the elements involved in winning matches. Coaches will be given the opportunity to take part in practical coaching sessions, lectures, analysis and discussion in all of these subject areas.
While this course is aimed at Canadian Soccer Association A License holders who will be given preference, B License-National Coaches working with elite players may apply. More
CSA Launches New Online Coaching System - iCoach'

Ottawa, Ontario - As part of its commitment to grass roots development the CSA is proud to announce the launch of its new Online Coaching System known as iCoach'. iCoach' was designed in association with Nortia Technologies to assist coaches to plan, share and save practice sessions, schedule games and tournaments, develop team lists and store and track player information. In addition, with its internal message centre and discussion board each player and coach within a team can be in touch with one another on a real time basis. [iCoach]
I think that this tool will be a great help to coaches at all levels and will simplify all aspects of organizing their coaching duties, said Ray Clark, Director of Coaching & Player Development for the Canadian Soccer Association. Lower Island discusses "Vision for the Future"

Over one hundred soccer stakeholders form the Lower Island Soccer Association met on November 30th at the Princess Mary Restaurant. The title of the meeting was Technical Directions Forum.
The L.I.S.A. and British Columbia Soccer Association took the opportunity to share and discuss British Columbia's new Player Development Model. Presentations were made by Mike Findlay, B.C.S.A. Senior staff coach, Sean Fleming CSA National Staff Coach, Bob Lenarduzzi, Director of soccer operations for the Whitecaps, Frank Yallop, men's World Cup coach, Carl Valentine, current North Shore Development Center Head Coach and former National team member. They all emphasized within their presentations the importance of working together to help assist all programs in Canada to reach their true potential. More
Grassroots Growing in the North Shore

The North Shore Soccer Development Center was visited by CSA staff coach Sean Fleming, from November 8-10, 2004. NSSDC has been in operation for five years and last year was designated by British Columbia Soccer Association as one of eleven District Development Centers in British Columbia. The NSSDC comprises of fan four clubs (approx. 7000 athletes) that access the professional coaching and programs of the center. Carl Valentine, former Men's World Cup Player leads an enthusiastic and excellent coaching staff who works hard for their member clubs. The results of their good work are many. The North Shore area has seen four elementary schools close in the past few years yet the membership of the soccer community has risen. This year alone over one hundred coaches have been certified and another forty are continuing their coaching development by taking the B Prep course. The Center and Clubs need to be commended for their tremendous cooperation and vision in working together to achieve this great center of development. Valentine describes the philosophy of the center as get the ball down and play. It was certainly demonstrated in the coaching and quality play of the players. Valentine stresses the great teamwork of all involved as a major contribution to the centers success. More

Soccer Symposium and World Cup Qualifying Game

From Sept 2-4, 38 soccer coaches came together at a soccer symposium at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton to discuss coaching methods, playing styles, systems of play, tactics, and overall match analysis
Coaches attended from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and over three days expanded their knowledge base by sharing their ideas and experiences at all levels. It was an excellent opportunity for coaching colleagues to discuss the recent trends within the game.
The course was a joint effort by the Alberta Soccer Association and the Canadian Soccer Association in combination with the Men's World Cup Qualifying game against Honduras. More
CSA to run B License-National Course in Halifax

Following the cancellation of the course scheduled to take place on June 21-27, in Ontario, the CSA has decided to offer a B License-National Course in Halifax, Nova Scotia, August 21-27, 2004.
The decision to run a course in Halifax was made after the CSA was informed there were a number of potential B License coaches in Atlantic Canada who were unable to attend courses previously offered in June due to scheduling concerns. In keeping with the CSA's efforts to improve access to National Courses across the Country, the association agreed to sponsor a course in the Atlantic Region this year.
By providing this opportunity we feel that we can have a favorable impact on the development of coaches in the area, said Ray Clark, Director of Coaching & Player Development for the CSA. By increasing the number of nationally qualified coaches, we believe it will help spread our philosophy on player development throughout Atlantic Canada and across the Country. More
Back to Class for CSA National B' License Courses

Vancouver, BC Heading back to class are 19 candidates 18 male and one female; of which 10 are from British Columbia, five from Alberta, two from Manitoba and one from Saskatchewan, who are serious about their coaching development to improve the overall qualities and standards of the players they work with. All Coaches accepted into the CSA National B' License have attained a passing grade in the first part of the course held within their Province.
Representing Western Canada, Burnaby, BC hosts the first of three CSA National B' License courses offered in 2004. The purpose of the course is to educate the candidates in the practical and theoretical developments in modern soccer, so that they may devise, organize, conduct and evaluate coaching sessions in basic and advanced skills, tactics, strategies and systems of play. Candidates will also better understand and employ the complimentary managerial, medical and coach-related aspects, appropriate to the role of the coach at the beginner through to the competitive level.
