Posted on 12 August 2010 in Men's U-20 Team

Canada's men's U-20 team is all set to compete in Alcúdia, Spain. The team kicks off in the Torneig Internacional Futbol Sub-20 on Friday 13 August, an eight-team international U-20 tournament featuring clubs and national teams.

Canada's three group opponents are Santos FC on 13 August, Valencia CF on 15 August and Guinea's U-20 national team on 17 August. Canada then faces a team from the opposite group - either Villarreal CF, Etoile Lusilanos, Uzbekistan U-20 or Ecuador - on Friday 20 August.

"We have had good training sessions this week," said Canadian head coach Valerio Gazzola. "The reputation of this tournament is one of high quality. We look forward to seeing our players respond to the competition."

This is coach Gazzola's second camp with Canada's men's U-20 team. The camp lineup features 20 players born 1991 or later, 14 of whom are new to Gazzola and his staff. Coach Gazzola is hoping to see as many players as possible at the early stages of his preparations.

On Thursday 12 August, the Canadian team took part in the opening ceremony at the main stadium, the Estadio Municipal de L'Alcúdia. The stadium had some 5,000 fans in attendance for the ceremony.

Canada's men's U-20 team is currently preparing for next year's 2011 CONCACAF Men's Under-20 Championship. That championship will serve as the qualification route for the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
