Canada qualifies for Francophone semis

Posted on 30 September 2009 in Men's U-20 Team

Canada's men's U-20 team has qualified for the semi-final stage at the 2009 Francophone Games in Lebanon. Canada finished first in Group B after a 2:0 victory over Cameroon. All three Group B teams finished with three points (one win, one loss), but Canada finished first on account of its superior goal differential.

“Full congratulations to all of our players,” said Canadian coach Tony Fonseca. “It was an excellent team win and we look forward to competing for a medal.”

Canada, Côte d'Ivoire and Morocco won their respective groups and qualified for the semi-final stage. Congo was the best second-place team and is the fourth team to qualify for the quarter-final stage. The semi-final stage is scheduled for 3 October.

This is Canada's sixth participation in the 2009 Francophone Games. Canada was champion in the inaugural event back in 1989. Canada's 2009 team features players born 1989 or later, thus making them eligible for the next Men's Olympic Football Tournament cycle which runs through 2012.
