2012 All Stars: Québec and Ontario secure early lead in U-16 group play

The opening match in U-16 Girls group play turned out to be a shootout, with a total of nine goals being scored.

Ontario took and early lead, with goals by Ashley Moreira in the 2nd minute and Veronica Bosco in the 6th minute. Alberta quickly decided to take action and even things up with two quick goals of their own.

By the time half rolled around Ontario had a 4-3 lead, but Alberta wasn’t going to sit back.

Opening the second half in style was Alberta’s Natalie Arnett who netted her third goal of the game, putting her in an early lead for the tournament’s coveted Golden Boot Award.

Ontario’s Isabella Habuda ended up putting away the game winner in the 52nd minute. The match concluded on a 5:4 win from Ontario over Alberta.

The tournament’s first match under the lights did not disappoint as Québec and British Columbia took the pitch to determine who was going to get the first three points in Group A.

After a 0-0 first half, Québec came out a different team and dominated possession, pinning British Columbia in their end.

Margerie Langlois scored an absolute cracker from the top of the 18 yard box to put her Québec side up 1-0 in the 52nd min.

Québec’s Kateri Rivard continued the pressure, generating many chances up the middle with some fantastic runs.

The chances continued for Québec as speedy Gabriella Cuerno made a run down the wing in added time but her strike was turned away by a diving British Columbia keeper Priya Sandhu.

Quebec’s goal held in the end, posting a final score of 1:0, and earned the team three points in group play.

The U-16’s crossover match saw Team Atlantic dominate Team Manitoba/Saskatchewan and saw goals by Jill MacDonald, Akindoju Sope and Chloe Brennan in the 3:0 win.
